Western New Mexico University has officially named Matt Enriquez as its Director of Athletics, as announced by Interim President Chris Maples, marking the culmination of a remarkable 21-year journey within Mustang Athletics. Enriquez has been serving as 鶹ֱ’s Interim Athletics Director since June 2025.

A 2006 graduate and 2015 鶹ֱ Athletic Hall of Famer, Enriquez has built one of the most complete careers in program history; excelling as a student-athlete, coach, and administrator. As a standout on the men’s basketball team from 2002–06, he scored 1,591 career points, placing him among the top players in school history while earning a reputation for leadership and consistency.

Following his playing career, Enriquez remained at 鶹ֱ and transitioned into coaching, eventually becoming Head Men’s Basketball Coach in 2016. His time on the sidelines emphasized student-athlete development both academically and athletically, reflecting the values that shaped his own experience.

In 2019, Enriquez moved into administration, serving as Assistant and later Associate Athletics Director for Internal Operations. In that role, Enriquez developed a comprehensive understanding of what it takes to sustain and grow an athletic program.

Over his 21-year tenure, Enriquez has been a central figure in shaping the evolution of 鶹ֱ Athletics. His deep institutional knowledge, combined with an unwavering commitment in the university’s mission, has made him a steady and trusted leader during times of transition.

During this past year as Interim Athletics Director, Matt Enriquez has overseen a year of impressive success both on the field and in the classroom for Western New Mexico. Mustang student-athletes posted a 3.19 cumulative GPA, with 126 earning recognition on the Lone Star Conference Commissioner’s Fall 2025 Honor Roll and 52 earning a perfect 4.0 GPA. Competitive success followed across multiple programs, highlighted by 16 All-Conference selections and a historic season for men’s basketball, which recorded a program-best 22 wins and advanced to both the Lone Star Conference and NCAA Tournaments for the first time in school history. Volleyball and softball each recorded their highest win totals since 2016. women’s golf captured the Southwest Minnesota State (SMSU) Spring Invite title, and men’s tennis reached its highest national ranking at No. 34. Meanwhile, track and field continued its upward trajectory, consistently rewriting the program’s record books.

Beyond competition, Enriquez has prioritized enhancing the student-athlete experience through meaningful initiatives and community engagement. For the inaugural Pink Game for Men’s and Women’s basketball, all proceeds raised through ticket sales and donations went to the Gila Regional Cancer Center. Enriquez reintroduced the department’s senior banquet in April to celebrate graduating student-athletes, while also strengthening collaboration with the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) to recognize Faculty of the Semester and organize community outreach efforts through a toy drive. Additionally, Mustang Athletics has seen a notable increase in fundraising efforts this year, further strengthening support for student-athlete resources and future program development. Enriquez was also pivotal in bringing back the 鶹ֱ Athletics Hall of Fame in 2026, further recognizing the success of past athletes and remembering their impact on the school. In addition, Enriquez has expanded opportunities for student-athletes through new Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) initiatives, creating added exposure and branding potential.

His appointment as Director of Athletics solidifies a leadership path built on experience, loyalty, accomplishments, and deep institutional knowledge. Having served 鶹ֱ Athletics in nearly every capacity, Enriquez now leads the department with a clear vision rooted in student-athlete success and long-term program growth.

“Matt’s vision and accomplishments over the past year speak for themselves. His commitment to student success both in the classroom and in their chosen sports is the perfect combination for Western New Mexico University. It has been an honor and privilege to work with him during my year here at 鶹ֱ,” said Interim President Chris Maples.

“I’m incredibly excited and deeply honored to continue serving in this role. This truly is a dream come true after so many years at 鶹ֱ,” Enriquez said. “This moment is humbling and energizing, and it reflects the passion and commitment of our student-athletes, coaches, and staff, who make this place so special.”

“I’m especially grateful to Interim President Dr. Maples for his steady leadership and unwavering support, and to incoming President Dr. Coll for his confidence and bold vision for what lies ahead. I also want to thank the Board of Regents for their trust in me and in the future of our athletics program. I truly appreciate our campus and local community for the constant support, pride, and belief in our program. Their commitment helps fuel our success and create opportunities for our student-athletes to thrive. I’m excited to build on our momentum, elevate our programs, and continue creating an environment where our student-athletes can thrive both on the field and in the classroom. The future is bright, and I am thrilled to be part of leading us forward.”

The Enriquez family’s impact on Western New Mexico University extends well beyond athletics. His wife, Jessica Enriquez, serves as 鶹ֱ’s Director of the Registrar’s office. A proud alumna, Jessica holds multiple degrees from 鶹ֱ and brings more than two decades of experience across academic affairs, business affairs, and student services. Her dedication to guiding students through their educational journeys mirrors the family’s shared belief in the transformative power of higher education. Together, Matt and Jessica are raising their two daughters, Averi (13) and Allie (6), while continuing to contribute meaningfully to the Mustang community. Their story reflects service, loyalty, and a deep commitment to the mission of Western New Mexico University.

For Enriquez, this role is a continuation of a lifelong commitment to Western New Mexico University.

The spirit of competition and community was on full display this past weekend. Western New Mexico University (鶹ֱ) concluded its historicGreat Racefor April 2026. A hallmark of the university’s spring calendar, the event drew hundreds of students, alumni, and residents to a high-octane tradition. This tradition has defined campus culture for generations.

The race involves pre-built go-carts maintained by the university, pushed by runners in a relay format. It tests both physical endurance and mechanical reliability. This year’s course featured challenging turns and elevation changes. The event provided an exciting spectacle for crowds lining the route. Spectators enjoyed a festival atmosphere at Regent’sSquare, with live music and food vendors.

The 2026 event drew four teams:Twisted Team,Death Hawks,Kids Next Door, andRoyal Family. After a week of activities, Saturday’s main race was one of the most competitive in recent memory.

Kids Next Doorclaimed the top spot on the podium. They used a meticulously maintained cart and a synchronized pit crew to hold a slim lead through the final laps. TheRoyal Familystaged an impressive comeback to take second.Twisted Teamsecured a hard-fought third-place finish.

Beyond the track, several specialty awards recognized creativity and spirit:

  • Death Hawks:Best Cart Design (vibrant purple-and-green), Most Team Spirit, and Best Flag.
  • Royal Family:Best Jersey.
  • Twisted Team:Best Team Chant.

“The Great Race is more than just a competition; it is both a credit to our students and a validation of the Mustang spirit of teamwork, ingenuity, and perseverance they possess,” said AS鶹ֱ President CarlosCarranza. “Seeing the energy on the streets of Silver City and the camaraderie between the teams reminds us why this tradition remains the heartbeat of our spring semester.”

The 2026 iteration emphasized sustainability. Several teams used recycled materials for cart frames.

鶹ֱ also expanded its reach through the 鶹ֱ First Annual Virtual Great Race via the GooseChase app. It was so popular with online students that all slots were filled.

This new virtual event included challenges like a Talent Show and “Pit Stop” mobile games. In the virtual standings, theW Mountainstook first place with 145,000 points.Stang StatuesandBell Towers followed.

Christian Reyes Gallardo, an international student from Michoacán, Mexico, currently residing in the university campus dorms, took part in the new virtual great race. “It was some of the best moments of the semester. The most fun activities of the virtual great race were the online games, since those activities were video games that I used to play as a kid, and I had a lot of fun,” Gallardo said. He indicated that he participated in all but the first online activity. “This first virtual Great Race was a great idea and experience to find new ways to connect with more people virtually. With fun activities to do every day, I know that this idea has a lot of potential to enhance and include more people within the next few years,” Gallardo said.

鶹ֱ extends its gratitude to local law enforcement, emergency services, and the dozens of volunteers who ensured a safe weekend. The collaboration between the university and the Silver City community remains a cornerstone of the event’s longevity.

The ranking places 鶹ֱ among the top teams in the South Central Region and reflects the team’s performance throughout what has been the most successful season the program has ever seen. When the world tuned in to watch Super Bowl LX earlier this month, the Western New Mexico University (鶹ֱ) community had a monumental reason to cheer. Leah Lopez, a former 鶹ֱ student and member of the university’s prestigious mariachi program, took the global stage as a featured violinist during Bad Bunny’s record-breaking halftime performance at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, California.

Bad Bunny, who performed the Super Bowl halftime show almost entirely in Spanish, was a landmark cultural event designed as a sweeping tribute to Latino heritage and featuring a violin orchestra to add classical depth to the modern genre.

Lopez was among a select group of elite musicians chosen to share the spotlight with the global Latin icon. Dressed in a signature brown suit and bowtie—a visual nod to the working-class roots and traditional aesthetics celebrated throughout the set—Lopez and her violin were visible to an estimated 125 million viewers worldwide. Her soaring musical accompaniment provided the melodic backbone for Bad Bunny’s hit song “Monaco,” a track that masterfully blends high-energy trap with classical orchestral elements.

For Lopez, the journey to the most-watched musical event in the world began years ago in her hometown of Tucson, Arizona, where she performed with mariachi bands. After enrolling at 鶹ֱ, she became a dedicated and foundational member of the university’s mariachi ensembles. It was at 鶹ֱ that she honed the technical precision, rigorous discipline, and vibrant stage presence that would eventually propel her to professional success in the competitive Los Angeles music scene.

“Seeing one of our students represent the culture and the high caliber of talent we cultivate here at 鶹ֱ is an incredibly proud moment for the entire university,” said AS鶹ֱ President Carlos Carranza. “Leah’s performance on the world’s biggest stage is a testament to her relentless hard work and the artistic foundation she built while participating in our mariachi program. She embodies the spirit of a Mustang—resilient, talented, and ready to lead.”

Lopez’s path from the quiet landscapes of Silver City to performing alongside a global icon also led her to live in Guadalajara, Mexico, where she played with a well-known Mexican mariachi band. She then relocated to Los Angeles and alongside other top-tier musicians, Lopez was independently contracted to perform in the Super Bowl halftime show.

Lopez’s participation highlights the intertwining of traditional musical education and modern entertainment. Her roots in the Southwest and deep training in mariachi music provided the perfect stylistic versatility required for Bad Bunny’s genre-bending sound. This performance not only showcased her individual virtuosity but also emphasized the enduring relevance of traditional music programs in preparing students for diverse professional careers.

“Leah’s ability to translate the emotion and technique of mariachi into a global pop context is exactly what we hope for our students and alumni. She has shown our current students that there truly are no limits to where their education can take them,” Carranza said.

When asked for advice on following their dreams, Lopez said, “Say yes to every opportunity you can!”

Lopez is also featured on the 鶹ֱ banners around campus in Silver City and on billboards throughout the community.

Western New Mexico University (鶹ֱ) is seeking funds from the state legislature to modernize its athletic infrastructure and expand comprehensive health services for 鶹ֱ student-athletes. The university’s proposal centers on the conviction that modernized facilities are a prerequisite for student success.

The primary focus of the legislative request is an overhaul of aging HVAC (Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning) and air filtration systems within the university’s athletic complexes. The proposed upgrades include the implementation of smart-zoning technology, designed to maintain regulated temperatures and high air quality in high-exertion environments such as weight rooms and practice courts.

“In the unique high-altitude climate of Silver City, precise climate control is far more than a matter of comfort—it is a medical necessity,” said Interim Athletics Director Matt Enriquez. “Modernizing these systems allows us to meet 21st-century health standards and ensures our facilities are optimized for both peak performance and rapid physiological recovery.”

The university’s request specifically targets a $4.5 million investment to address the upgrade of the HVAC systems in university athletics facilities is essential to ensuring the health, safety and comfort of student-athletes and Mustang Athletics fans, allowing events to be enjoyed consistently. A modernized system supports optimal athletic performance, enhances the spectator experience, and protects facilities by maintaining stable indoor environments year-round.

By replacing obsolete mechanical components with high-efficiency, variable-speed technology, the proposed upgrades are projected to further decrease utility expenditures and reduce the persistent need for emergency maintenance interventions. These modernized systems will not only provide a stable indoor environment for high-altitude training but also serve as a vital safeguard for the university’s physical assets against the moisture-related degradation common in aging ventilation infrastructure.

Beyond physical infrastructure, the initiative includes a multi-faceted approach to wellness, featuring expanding access to specialized counseling services tailored to the specific psychological pressures of collegiate athletics, refining protocols to ensure student-athletes arrive at competitions well-rested and properly fueled, and implementing state-of-the-art training equipment and injury-prevention protocols to safeguard long-term physical health.

“鶹ֱ is moving forward with a clearer vision,” Enriquez said. “By linking our recovery efforts to the student-athlete experience, we are creating a feedback loop of success. When our students feel supported in their wellness, the entire university community grows stronger.”

In a powerful display of community solidarity and athletic grit, Western New Mexico University (鶹ֱ) hosted its annual “Pink Out” night on Tuesday, January 20, at Drag’s Court. The double-header event, featuring both the Women’s and Men’s Basketball teams against Sul Ross State, served as a cornerstone of fundraising for breast cancer awareness and local healthcare support.

The highlight of the evening was a special halftime ceremony in which 鶹ֱ Athletics officials and university leadership presented a donation check to representatives from the Gila Regional Cancer Center (GRCC). The funds, raised through ticket sales, proceeds from commemorative “Pink Out” t-shirts, and community donations, will remain in Grant County to support local patients undergoing cancer treatment.

The atmosphere in the arena was electric as more than 500 fans arrived early to secure limited-edition 鶹ֱ Pink Out shirts. Students, faculty, and Silver City residents traded their traditional purple and gold for shades of pink, creating a visual testament to the university’s commitment to the fight against breast cancer.

“The Pink Out game was one of the most meaningful nights on our athletic calendar,” said Interim President Chris Maples, Ph.D. “It’s about more than just the score on the board; it’s about honoring the survivors in our stands, raising awareness of early detection for cancer, and ensuring that our local cancer center has the resources to continue their life-saving work right here in Silver City. It is my hope that this will become a highly anticipated annual event at 鶹ֱ and in Silver City.” 鶹ֱ and the community raised $600 for the GRCC.

The Mustang Men’s Basketball team channeled the night’s energy into a commanding performance, securing a 69-51 victory over the Sul Ross State Lobos. The win underscored the team’s momentum in the Lone Star Conference and provided a triumphant capstone to the night’s festivities.

Earlier in the evening, the Mustang Women’s team fought a hard-edged battle against the Lobos. Although they fell short in a narrow contest, the team’s spirit remained high as they joined the halftime tributes to breast cancer “fighters and survivors” within the 鶹ֱ family.

The partnership between 鶹ֱ Athletics and the GRCC highlights the university’s role as a regional leader in social responsibility. By directing 100% of the event’s proceeds to the local center, 鶹ֱ ensures that the “Mustang Spirit” translates into tangible medical support, transportation assistance, and wellness resources for neighbors battling the disease.

From Mustang Greatness to DI Coaching Prowess: The Rise of Yair Banuelos

When Yair Banuelos arrived in Silver City from Mexico City, few could have predicted that he would go on to become one of the most decorated men’s tennis players in Western New Mexico University history. His journey from the courts of 鶹ֱ to the elite Division I coaching level is a story of resilience, growth, and unrelenting competitive spirit – one that continues to inspire student-athletes long after his playing days.

Before joining the Mustangs, Yair played two seasons at Riverside Community College in California, where his talent and work ethic quickly set him apart. When he transferred to 鶹ֱ, it didn’t take long for him to make an impact. His precision on the court, leadership with the team, and commitment to excellence helped elevate Mustang tennis to new heights. During his career, Yair established himself as one of the program’s all-time greats. He earned the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) Player of the Year award, First-Team All-RMAC honors in both singles and doubles, and became a consistent force in regional competition. In his senior season, he achieved a flawless 6–0 record in both singles and doubles during conference play – a feat that reflected both his skill and competitive drive. Yair was also named Senior Player of the Year for the South Central Region and was recognized as the RMAC Honor Student-Athlete of the Year for his performance on the court and his excellence in the classroom.

Beyond the numbers, Yair’s presence helped define an era of Mustang tennis dominance. Under his leadership, 鶹ֱ secured multiple RMAC regular season and tournament titles, with Banuelos anchoring the lineup and setting a tone of determination that his teammates fed off. His combination of poise, intensity, and intelligence made him a natural leader, and those same qualities would later form the foundation of his coaching philosophy.

After earning his bachelor’s degree in kinesiology with a coaching minor from Western New Mexico in 2011, Yair stayed in Silver City to pursue a master’s degree in interdisciplinary studies, which he completed in 2013. During that time, he transitioned from player to mentor, serving as a graduate assistant before taking over as head coach of both the men’s and women’s tennis programs. As a young coach, Yair quickly proved that his success as a player was no coincidence. His teams continued to dominate the RMAC, capturing conference championships and producing nationally ranked players. In 2015, his leadership and success earned him RMAC Women’s Coach of the Year honors – a fitting acknowledgment of the impact he had on both programs. Banuelos was honored into the 鶹ֱ Athletics Hall of Fame in 2018, a deserving accolade for one of the highest achieving players and coaches that Mustang Tennis has seen.

Yair’s ability to build culture, motivate student-athletes, and sustain excellence eventually led him to a new challenge: leading the men’s and women’s tennis programs at Auburn University at Montgomery (AUM). There, he carried forward the same Mustang mindset that had defined his career. Under his guidance, AUM became a consistent national contender in NCAA Division II, reaching the South Region Tournament and earning a national ranking as high as No. 14. His teams produced multiple All-Americans, All-Region honorees, and maintained strong academic standing – proof that Yair’s coaching philosophy extended well beyond competition. Over several successful seasons, he compiled more than 200 career coaching victories, cementing his reputation as one of the brightest young minds in collegiate tennis.

In 2023, Yair took the next step in his journey when he joined Iowa State University as an assistant coach, helping lead the Cyclones’ women’s tennis program at the Division I level. His rise from international student-athlete to nationally respected coach is a testament to his dedication, adaptability, and love for the sport. The Esports program at Western New Mexico University (鶹ֱ) transitions from a competitive newcomer to a formally recognized program. The program has officially joined the Play vs. College League (PCL), marking a significant step toward establishing 鶹ֱ as a forward-thinking institution prepared to embrace the future of competitive technology.

Esports—competitive video gaming—currently enjoys massive global growth, accelerating significantly during and after the COVID-19 pandemic. It’s an activity that provides a modern, inclusive platform for students not always inclined toward traditional physical sports. For 鶹ֱ team members, the program demonstrates the university’s commitment to staying consistently current.

“A lot of things here at the university are traditionally based, but we also embrace the future and what it offers us, especially through tech,” says Esports Club Manager, Antonio Canari, a junior majoring in Marketing and Psychology.

The 鶹ֱ Esports program, which began a few years ago, involves a growing number of students competing in popular titles such as Rocket League, Overwatch, and the fighting game Super Smash Bros. Dedicated faculty and staff, including Dean Foster, Joseph Suarez, and support from others in the 鶹ֱ IT department, championed the Esports program’s rapid growth.

Early tournament attempts were challenging, but the players’ dedication paid off. The turning point came in Spring 2025, when the 鶹ֱ team secured a significant victory in Overwatch at a competition in Las Cruces.

“What sets the 鶹ֱ program apart is our modest size, which fosters a more individualized, supportive, and effective environment,” Canari said. “Players benefit from more personalized attention and close contact with coaches to hone their skills,” Canari notes.

Teams, which range from three to six players depending on the game, are built on a foundation of camaraderie and fun. Beyond the fun and the thrill of winning, the program teaches strategic problem-solving, teamwork, and clear, concise communication—essential for success in fast-paced, competitive environments.

The primary long-term goals for 鶹ֱ Esports include maintaining successful membership in the PCL, winning a major league tournament, and hosting larger in-person tournaments on campus.

Student enthusiasm drives Esports success at 鶹ֱ, but its future growth depends on community support. The Esports team seeks donations to fund a dedicated Esports room in the Global Resource Center (GRC), which requires approximately $15,000 for essential equipment, including high-performance computers, monitors, and peripherals. This space is vital for organized training, team building, and hosting the university’s first formal, large on-campus tournaments.
